Spinal Decompression, a treatment offered by our chiropractor, Dr. Neil, at Superior Spine Care, is a non-surgical, non-pharmaceutical treatment for bulging and herniated discs. It works equally well on both cervical (neck) and lumbar (low back) conditions. Some conditions that are helped by decompression include sciatica (pain down the leg) and cervical radiculopathy (pain down the arm.) Diffuse neck and back pain can also be an indication for treatment, if it is being caused by an injured disc. Along with reviewing your MRI, the doctor will also do an examination to determine if your problem can be helped by decompression treatments.
How Does Spinal Decompression Work?
Spinal decompression works by gently opening up the spaces between the bones of the spine. This creates more room for the cushions between the bones, otherwise known as the intervertebral discs. This decreases the pressure on the discs as well as the nearby nerves, allowing the injured tissues to heal.
How Long Will My Spinal Decompression Last?
Treatments last about 15 minutes, during which the patient lies flat on their back on the treatment table. Many patients are so relaxed they actually doze off during the therapy! Prior to a decompression session, patients may undergo stretching with the physical therapist or will have an alignment performed by the chiropractor. Electrical muscle stimulation is sometimes utilized to relax the muscles along the spine prior to treatment.
Can Spinal Decompression Treat Car Accidents and Whiplash?
We have had many patients who have suffered from whiplash and injured discs from car accidents who have benefited from Spinal Decompression. The constant ache and limited motion of the neck are slowly relieved by the rhythmic stretching of the decompression. We have also helped many patients who have injured their lower back while lifting at work. Improving their motion and decreasing their back pain allows them to return back to their normal life.
How Many Spinal Decompression Treatments Should I Expect?
Depending on the severity of your condition, you may require anywhere from 8-20 treatment sessions to get full relief from your pain. Once your pain subsides and your motion improves, the team at Superior Spine Care in North Olmsted will also provide you with the necessary stretches and exercises to improve function and help prevent future injury.
