What are Migraines?

A migraine is an intense headache that can last for hours, or even days. Movement, activity, or bright light can aggravate the sensation of pounding or pulsing that usually begins in the forehead, around the eyes or on the sides of the head. Women are more likely than men to suffer from migraines. These headaches can occur sporadically a few times a year, or come on frequently many times per month.

Many migraine sufferers report warning signs of a migraine known as an “aura.” These auras usually involve changes in your vision, such as patterns of lights or part of the vision “greying out.” These visual disturbances usually last 15-30 minutes. Normally they take place before the headache, and in some rare cases the headache is absent.

Following a migraine you may feel sluggish, irritable, or restless. There are a wide range of migraine symptoms, but one thing they have in common is that the migraines interfere with your daily life, work, recreation and social activities. Many migraine sufferers will call off work and other activities to spend time in a dark room until the migraine passes.

How are Migraines Treated?

There are medications that can help with the symptoms if they are taken when the migraine begins to start. As with many conditions, diet, exercise, and drinking enough water is important. Keeping a migraine journal may help identify migraine triggers so that you can avoid them.

At Superior Spine Care, we look at the alignment of the bones in your upper neck to make sure there is not excess pressure on the head. We use several different techniques to gently re-align the upper neck which helps relieve tension. We also discuss ergonomics relative to computer use, work positions, driving, and sleep positions to make sure these aren’t contributing to putting more stress on your head and upper neck. We have had very good success with helping migraine sufferers reduce the intensity and frequency of their migraines, and in some cases, have been able to keep them from coming back at all!
