Acupuncture for Anxiety

Acupuncture for Anxiety

With so much uncertainty and stress in the world today, it’s understandable if you’re suffering from anxiety. In the United States, around 19.1% of adults have an anxiety disorder in a given year, and 31.1% experience an anxiety disorder at some point in their lives.

The good news is that there is research suggesting that Acupuncture is a safe, effective therapy to help compliment other treatments to manage anxiety.

Benefits

Acupuncture can help reduce anxiety symptoms by:

• Stimulating feel-good hormones

• Reducing stress hormones like cortisol

• Regulating the nervous system

• Deactivating the “analytical” brain

• Reducing sensitivity to stress and pain

Effectiveness

Some studies show that acupuncture is effective for anxiety disorders, especially generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). However, other studies have found that the quality of research is variable and that there is insufficient evidence to draw firm conclusions.

Limitations

Acupuncture may not be effective for all types of anxiety disorders, such as panic disorder, phobias, or obsessive-compulsive disorder.
Acupuncture can be a good treatment option in addition to medications or talk therapy.

Disclaimer: Acupuncture is not a substitute for conventional medical diagnosis and treatment. Acupuncture is a complementary medicine therapy. Complementary medicine means working alongside, and in conjunction with, the conventional medical system. This provides a holistic model of care to treat the patient as a whole.
