Acupuncture Helps Fibromyalgia

Acupuncture Helps Fibromyalgia

The World Health Organization has long endorsed Acupuncture for the treatment of many conditions, especially those dealing with chronic pain  This also includes Fibromyalgia.

What is Fibromyalgia?  At more than 3 million cases in the United States every year, it's more common that you would think, at almost 1 in 100 people developing the disease.  Fibromyalgia can be characterized by it's symptoms  Pain throughout the body, often described as a constant dull ache is the main symptom Fibromyalgia sufferers deal with.  Typically this is felt in the muscles of the body, as Fibromyalgia literally translates to "muscle and fibrous tissue pain." Fatigue or frequent tiredness is another common component.  This can lead to focus problems and difficulty with mental tasks.

How Does Acupuncture Help?  By stimulating specific points on the ear (Auricular Acupuncture) which correspond to different areas or systems of the body, Acupuncture can help reduce pain and inflammation and muscle tension.  During a treatment, the body also releases endorphins, commonly known as the body's "feel good" chemicals.  Acupuncture is also thought to improve blood flow and increase energy levels.

A recent study stated:  "An increasing number of studies support the utilization of acupuncture for the treatment of fibromyalgia. Though no head-to-head comparison was able to show the superiority of acupuncture to other therapies, mounting evidence supports its use as part of multimodal approaches to treatment with additive efficacy to traditional therapy."

What this means is that if you are already treating your Fibromyalgia with other therapies, adding Acupuncture could be beneficial to further reduce pain and fatigue symptoms.
